AMFORHT: sustainable tourism is a must

Sustainable tourism, when effectively managed, is seen by AMFORHT as the key solution for many countries to enhance their GDP and the well-being of their population.
Nevertheless, tourism has both positive and negative impacts on local communities worldwide.

On one hand, it offers economic advantages by boosting local economies through various means such as spending in airlines, car-rentals, hotels, restaurants, attractions, and more.
Additionally, it indirectly supports other sectors like agriculture and retail, ultimately leading to the creation of jobs and an improved standard of living for the locals.

However, it is important to acknowledge that these economic benefits can be unevenly distributed, resulting in social inequality.
As many studies demonstrate, the wealthier individuals and corporations tend to benefit the most, leaving the poorer segments to bear the negative consequences.

Regarding the socio-cultural aspect, tourism can play a role in preserving local traditions and heritage as they become significant attractions for tourists.
Nonetheless, it is worth noting that there is a risk of commodifying the culture, as traditions may be altered to cater to the expectations of tourists - like with many Indian Reservations in the USA.
Improperly managed, this process definitively erodes the authenticity of local cultures and traditions.

Tourism has the potential to support the preservation and safeguarding of natural areas as they gain popularity among travelers.
Nevertheless, if not managed properly, it can result in environmental harm. Problems like overcrowding, pollution, and depletion of resources are frequent issues encountered by these popular destinations.
Venice, Italy, is one recent example, among many, of a destination that has started to push back against tourism.

While global tourism brings economic benefits, it also presents challenges in terms of socio-cultural fabric and the environment.
It is pivotal for policy-makers to establish sustainable tourism practices that strike a balance between economic prosperity and the preservation of local cultures and the environment.

This is why an increasing number of governments worldwide seek the assistance of AMFORHT to support them in the implementation of their individual sustainable tourism strategies through training and education in the hospitality and tourism sector.
